How to set-up speedometers in your report servlets

Do you have one set of data that needs to be graphed against a specific, pre-defined range? If so, a speedometer could be your perfect graphing tool.

Speedometers can even be used to graph multiple sets of data, with multiple needles pointing to your data. However, for this tutorial, we will focus on the single set of data.

Below is an example of a speedometer where the data is a percentage (perfect for pre-defined range 0 – 100) of how many calls are resolved the same day. As the data fluctuates, so does the needle!

Setting up the speedometer is simple and will only take a few minutes…

1) Generate, build, and compile a report as usual. Be sure to select “Report with Graph” from the Application Defaults link.

2) Click on the paint palette next to the appropriate program on the Manage Reports screen.

You should now see a screen similar to this:

3) Right click on the bar graph and select “Graph Properties.”

4) Select “Speedometer Chart” from the Image Style drop down box. Also, scroll down to the bottom of the window to change the speedometer properties:

Here you are able to alter the look and feel of the speedometer, including thickness, color, and font.

5) Click the “Image Data Collection” tab.

6) In the Graph Values text area box, place the data you wish to graph. Next, type in a meaningful description in the Graph Value Descriptions.

7) The graph value groups are what separate the ranges in your data. At each break, the color will shift to indicate a new group. The Speedometer graph section is what describes each section break. Be sure to have one less description in the Speedometer Graph Section than you have Graph Value Groups.

8) Hit OK & save your painting by clicking on the floppy disk.

Just out of interest, is it possible to use multiple needles to point to items within a list of data?

For example if you had several stock items and you wanted to show the stock position for each one.

It's OK now.
Forgot to move the Data Collection icon on the graph up to the detail line of the data I was interested in.

Good tip by the way and should come in useful for our portal system.
