Last year, as mrc celebrated our 25th anniversary, we took the time to compile a list of our top 10 improvements of all time, and many of them came in most recent years.

Since we compiled that list in October (see further below) we've added quite a few notable additions to the list. Here are the ones you definitely shouldn't miss:

  • m-Power's Web 2.0 templates have simplified the import technique making it even easier to create dashboard-style apps
  • Speed for classic mrc servlets improved by up to 40%: That means all of your current Web applications will run a lot faster.
  • Web interface automates migration from classic servlet HTML skeleton to Web 2.0 servlet HTML skeleton
  • mrc applications allow selections on nulls to find unmatched records for a more thorough search mechanism.
  • Create new tables from data dictionary and include copied data from a spreadsheet such as Excel: This means, you can share Excel-based data via the Web by creating applications and importing spreadsheets into m-Power. To see how this works, visit this fast demo.
  • Web interface improved to enable direct editing of properties mrcSignon.html etc.
  • Web 2.0 Inquiry Templates are now available.
  • m-Painter is a feature of m-Power that makes it easy and intuitive to create the look for your Web applications and including all sorts of bells and whistles, even if you've never seen HTML before.
For more information, on the updates themselves, you can visit our update list, and download a cumulative update: http://www.mrcwindows.com/mrcjava/servlet/CUSTOMERS.I00010s

mrc turned 25 this past year, and we took a moment to reflect on how far we've come since 1981, and we found to our surprise, that the last two years have reflected the most significant advancements.

So, really, we're celebrating more of a "rebirth"day!

Here are the 10 ten advancements you should know about:

10. m-Power: m-Power is a Web application development tool. (The mrc-Productivity Series and m-Power are sister products.)

The main difference between the two is that m-Power is fully Java-based and runs on any platform and writes applications that run on any platform and write to any database, giving you full flexibility. The mrc-Productivity Series requires an iSeries, but also creates applications that run on any platform and writes to any database, giving you full flexibility.

9. No irrelevant procedural or meta-languages: m-Power does not require users to use any procedural oro proprietary meta-languages. All logic can be written in whatever language the developer feels comfortable in, and there are no new languages to learn--including Java.

8. Multiple databases: Both software tools produce 100% Java-based applications That means these applications can access data from multiple (disparate) databases at the same time, and be served on any platform. (And, it means you or any Java consultant can get their work done in a fraction of the time, but still have the ability to customize or change applications at any point.)

7. Learning tool for Java: m-Power allows users to begin learning Java as they use it.

6. Not just a report-writer. You can also create:

  • Portals: You can create portlets, the applications running in and on portals.
  • Executive Dashboards: Import feature enables dashboard apps and multiple SQL calls
  • Calendaring applications with robust capabilities, that allow companies to change the way they share scheduling information, automating to interact with software such as MRPs, or CRMs.
  • Custom ERPs, MRPs, CRMs, SCMs, Inventory management systems, and the like.
5. DIY Web design: With cascading style sheets and new graph formatting, it's easy to import your own site's Web look and feel, and enhance it with the built-in plug-and-play online design studio: m-Painter Graphs are more easy to modify and use.

4. n-tier architecture and SOA: Arguably the best architecture for longevity, mrc-built applications are built automatically using n-tier architecture, which means the modules or tiers of these applications can be exchanged, re-used, and live on separate servers, which is one of the first requirements of SOA.

3. Built-in AJAX (Now you can harness high-end Web features to allow your users to more easily access information. For example, one way AJAX is sometimes used is users, in a search field, can see the options available to them narrowed down as they type.)

2. Switch-flip RPG to Java (Switching over from RPG to Java in minutes.) This means if you have mrc applications, you literally flip a switch and they become Web-based Java applications. No fooling.

1. New mrc Java copy file COMMAND: This latest feature will be released in next week or so. This is a brand new way to copy data from one database to another with a single Java command--just one step--preventing data-transfer errors, long and tedious procedures so that data is more reliable and developers save huge slices of time.
